Our Team

Our team is made up of safety professionals with extensive experience and training, including working with dental professionals. We are active members in safety organizations, including the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering and the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, and are bound by the code of ethics developed by these organizations.


Lauren McFarlane, President, BA, CHSC

Lauren McFarlane is the dynamic founder and President of Act First Safety / Dental Practice Safety, a Canadian leader in Occupational Health and Safety training, consulting, and safety product distribution.

Her career in Occupational Health and Safety began in 2003, following a successful sales and marketing career based in advertising, publishing, and new business development. She founded Act First Safety in 2006, after three years with a leading safety company. Her vision was to simplify Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) compliance for employers, saving them time and money while providing the highest quality of training and support. Under Lauren’s leadership, Act First Safety quickly developed a reputation for superb training programs, quality products, excellent customer service and unmatched expertise. The focus on continuous improvement is evident. The company is persistently expanding its offerings and in 2012 launched a program dedicated to the emerging field of dental practice safety.

Lauren is certified as a Health and Safety Consultant by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and has earned a long list of OHS certifications and training. An experienced and engaging speaker, Ms. McFarlane has presented at numerous industry conferences.

Elizabeth Rankin, B.A.Sc. (Hons), CRSP, OHS Consultant

Elizabeth, CRSP, OHS Consultant

Elizabeth brings a wealth of experience to the Dental Practice Safety team and has been helping organizations achieve their health, safety and wellness goals for nearly 20 years.

Elizabeth’s experience includes CSA Group’s Occupational Health and Safety Program, where she developed several leading-edge, high-profile health, safety and risk management national standards. She was a key player in the development of the new National Standard of Canada on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.  Having managed OHS for both unionized and non-unionized organizations, and as Senior Consultant for Gowlings’ National OHS legal and consulting practice, Elizabeth has gained extensive experience in all aspects of OHS training, implementation and maintenance in a variety of sectors.

Elizabeth is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional and a member of the board of directors for the Toronto chapter of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering. She is co-author of A Practical Guide to OHS Compliance in Ontario, Third Edition and a sought-after speaker. She holds a degree in Environmental Health (OHS specialty) from Ryerson University.

Brad Jackson

Brad finds the best and most appropriate safety products for our clients. He’s also a whiz with our online learning programs. You will get a chance to meet him if you reserve Fire Extinguisher Demonstration training or Respirator Fit Testing. We are always thankful for his sense of humor especially when we get a bit busy getting everything just right for our customers.


Audrey is our training coordinator and office manager. Her organization and customer service skills keep everything running smoothly, and are a big part of the reason that clients can count on us to be reliable and responsive to their needs.


Natasha is our training coordinator, ensuring that our customers get the right training at the right time. She keeps us all running on time, and is unfailingly helpful and friendly. She even laughs at Brad’s jokes!
